According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the prison population in the United States is made up of approximately 1,272,500 men and 109,800 women incarcerated in state and federal prisons. Almost 600,000 prisoners enter the prison system each year as either repeat offenders or newly incarcerated individuals. Although the exact studies are limited, there are thought to be approximately 1.27 children under the age of 18 for every inmate currently incarcerated – which would represent around 1,382,300 children.

The emotional strain and disruptions caused by losing a parent to incarceration can have a lasting negative affect on a child’s academic performance and engagement in school. Children may have difficulty concentrating, experience declines in their grades, or struggle with consistent attendance. The stress and stigma associated with having an incarcerated parent can also lead to social and emotional challenges, resulting in feelings of isolation and low self-esteem. Changes in living arrangements and school transitions can further disrupt this already difficult situation.

At CSCOA, we’re collaborating with local K-12 schools and community organizations to help provide educational resources and assist children with incarcerated parents. We interact with schools and educators to help provide a supportive environment, offer counseling services, and implement strategies to address the unique needs of these children to ensure these kids receive the support necessary for their educational success.
